Surface area is total area covered by the entire surface of the 3-dimensional object. If we cut open the pyramid we get 5 pieces. A pyramid is made of 4 triangles and a square. To find the surface area we need to add areas of the 4 triangles and square. Surface area of pyramid calculator is used to calculate the surface area using the base side and lateral height

Example 1: Calculation of the surface area of the pyramid:

For a given question we need to know the base side and the lateral side of the pyramid.

If the base side is donated by S,

Lateral height is donated by l,

Area of pyramid = area square base + 4 (side triagles)

Area of 4 triangles =4( ½ Sxl) = 2Sxl

Area of the square = SxS

Surface area of the pyramid = 2Sl + S2

Example 2: Calculation of the surface area of the pyramid when base and height is given:

For a given question we need to know the base side and the height of the pyramid.

If the base side is donated by S,

Height is donated by H,

Lateral height is donated by l,

In this case we will find the lateral height of the pyramid by Pythagorean Theorem

l2 = (1/2S)2 + H2 = √((1/2S)2 + H2)

Area of 4 triangles =4( ½ Sxl) = 2Sxl

Area of the square = SxS

Surface area of the pyramid = 2Sl + S2
