Example 1: Compute mean, median and range for these set of numbers, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, 11,12.
Mean : We need to add up all the numbers and divide the answer by number of values in the data. Therefore
when we add we get = 78/12 = 6.5
Mean = 6.5
Range : We need find the lowest and the highest value of the data and then subtract them to get the range.
Range = 11
Median : We need to put the numbers in order and find the middle value. When we have even values we find
the mean of the 2 middle numbers
Median: 6.5
Example 2: Compute mean, variance and standard deviation for these set of numbers 600, 170, 430, 300, 470
Mean : We need to add up all the numbers and divide the answer by number of values in the data. Therefore
when we add we get = 1970/5 = 394
Variance : Take difference of each value with mean, square the answers and find the average.
Value – mean : 206, -224, 76, -94, 36
Variances = 42436 + 50176+ 5776 + 8836+ 1296 = 108520/5 = 21704
Standard deviation : We need to find out standard deviation that will help measure how spread out numbers
are. We find the square root of the variance
√21704 = 147.32… = 147.
