Rydberg formula is the equation used in atomic physics formulated by Johannes Rydberg. This equation can

be used to calculate the wavelengths of spectral lines of different elements in the periodic table. Rydberg

equation calculator is the instant online tool which is used to find the wavelength of various spectral lines or

transitions of an electron in an atom.

Example 1: Calculate the wavelength if the transition in a hydrogen atom takes place from n1 = 2

to n2 = 4.

According to the Rydberg equation-> 1/λ = RH (1/n12 – 1/n22)

where λ= wavelength

RH = Rydberg’s constant = 1.097 * 107m-1

n1 and n2 are integers ≥ 1 and n2> n1

Given n1 = 2 and n2 = 4

Substituting in the above formula we get,

1/λ = 1.097 * 107m-1 (1/22 – 1/42)-> 1.097 * 107 * 0.1875

1/λ = 0.2057 * 107m-1-> λ = 1/ (0.2057 * 107m-1)

Wavelength, λ = 4.86 * 10-7

Example 2: Calculate the wavelength of an electromagnetic radiation if n1 = 3 and n2 = 5.

According to the Rydberg equation-> 1/λ = RH (1/n12 – 1/n22)

where λ = wavelength

RH = Rydberg’s constant = 1.097 * 107m-1

Given n1 = 3 and n2 = 5; n2> n1

Substituting in the above formula we get,

1/λ = 1.097 * 107m-1 (1/32 – 1/52)-> 1.097 * 107 * 0.0711

1/λ = 0.0780 * 107m-1-> λ = 1/ (0.0780 * 107m-1)

Wavelength, λ = 12.82 * 10-7
