Rounding off a number gives an approximate result. For example a number 32 when rounded to tens place is 30. Because 32

is closer to 30 when compared to 40. To round off larger numbers there are three steps.

Step 1: Observe the place which is to be rounded.

Step 2: If the next digit is < 5 then it remains the same.

Step 3: If the next digit is ≥ 5 then increase it by 1.

Example 1: Number is 176,248

(a)    Round off the number to the nearest tens place

(b)   Round off the number to the nearest hundreds place

Answer:

(a)    Here the tens place is 4.

The number after tens place is 8 (which is > 5). So add 1 to 4. 4 + 1 = 5

Round off the number to the nearest tens place = 176,250

(b)   Here the hundreds place is 2

The number after hundreds place is 4 (which is < 5). So 2 remain the same.

Round off the number to the nearest hundreds place = 176,200

Example 2: Edward has 47 candies with him. On Monday he got 21 candies from his mother Nikita and on Friday he got 15

candies from his father John. About how many candies does Edward have now?

Number of candies with Edward = 47

When rounded to nearest tens place it equals to 50

On Monday he got 21 candies from his mother.

When rounded to nearest tens place it equals to 20

On Friday he got 15 candies from his father.

When rounded to nearest tens place it equals to 20

So in total Edward has 50 + 20 + 20 = 90 candies.
