Range is the difference between the greatest and the lowest value in the given set of data. Finding range for a given
datainvolves three steps.
Step 1: Arranging the given data in ascending or descending order
Step 2: Find the largest number and smallest number in the data
Step 3: Finding the difference between them.
Example 1: Edward wrote 7 exams in Mathematics and secured 78, 91, 48, 68, 94, 66, 79 in his tests. Find the range of his
test scores.
Step 1: Arranging the data in ascending order
48, 66, 68, 78, 79, 91, 94
Step 2: Finding the largest and smallest number
Largest number = 94
Smallest number = 48
Step 3: Finding the difference between the largest and smallest numbers.
Range = 94 – 48 = 46
Hence the range of his test score is 46.
Example 2: Hourly wages of the employee are $5.50, $7.80, $18.20, $8.60, $12.40, $6.00, $9.30. Find the range of the above
data.
Step 1: Arranging the data in ascending order
$5.50, $6.00, $7.80, $8.60, $9.30, $12.40, $18.20
Step 2: Finding the largest and smallest number
Largest number = $18.20
Smallest number = $5.50
Step 3: Finding the difference between largest and smallest number.
Range = $18.20 - $5.50
= $12.70
Hence the range of the wages of employee is $12.70.
