Percent difference: if a and b is the two numbers such that a > b, then the difference between the numbers is : a – b, and average of two numbers is: (a + b) / 2 = c

Then, percent difference of the numbers a and b is given by, [(a – b) / c] * 100

Solution: Here we have a = 86 and b = 70. (a > b)

Let us first find the difference: a – b = 86 – 70 = 16

Average = (a + b) / 2 = (86 + 70) / 2 = 156 / 2 = 78

Percent difference = (16 / 78) * 100 = 20.51%

Solution:We have a = x and b = 10.

Difference: (a – b) = x – 10

Average of 10 and x : x + 10 / 2

Now, we know that percent difference = difference/ average * 100

ð 20 = (x – 10) / [(x + 10)/2] *100

ð Solving this expression for x we get, x = 12.222
