Fraction is the ratio of two numbers. The number on the top is called as numerator and the bottom one is the denominator. Multiplication of fractions involves three steps. Multiply the numerators, multiply the denominators of the fractions and the last but not least is to simplify the fraction if necessary.
Example 1: Multiply the fractions , and
Step 1: Multiply the numerators of all the three fractions. Here the numerators are 3, 4 and 14.
3 x 4 x 14 = 168
Step 2: Multiply the denominators of all the three fractions. Here the denominators are 17, 18 and 21.
17 x 18 x 21 = 6426
The product of all the given fractions =
Step 3: Simplify the fraction. Divide the numerator and denominator by 42.
Simplified fraction =
Example 2: Multiply the fraction with a whole number 15.
The whole number 15 can be written as a fraction.
Step 1: Multiply the numerators of the two fractions. Here the numerators are 4 and 15.
4 x 15 = 60
Step 2: Multiply the denominators of two fractions. Here the denominators are 30 and 1.
30 x 1 = 30
Product of the given fractions =
Step 3: Simplify the fraction. Divide the numerator and denominator by 30.
Simplified fraction = 2
