There are four arithmetic operations in Mathematics. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Suppose you have three bags and each bag contains 2 balls. Then the total number of balls is given by 3 x 2 = 6. Let us check the result by using addition. First bag has 2 balls, second bag has 2 balls and third bag also has 2 balls. So in total 2 + 2+ 2 = 6. Multiplication is denoted by the symbol “X” or “ . “ or “ * “.
Example 1: Edward plays a badminton game for 40 minutes per day. He plays on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. How many minutes of Badminton does he play per week.
Edward plays Badminton on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Total number of days = 5
For 1 day he is playing for 40 minutes.
For 5 days, he plays for 5 x 40 minutes = 200 minutes.
Hence Edward plays Badminton for 200 minutes per week.
Example 2: (a) There are 17 cars in the parking lot. Find the number of tires in the parking lot.
(b) There are 8 candies in each bag. Sam has 12 bags. How many candies does Sam have in total?
(a) Number of cars in the parking lot = 17
Number of tires for one car = 4
Number of tires for 17 cars = 17 x 4 = 68
Therefore the total number of tires in the parking lot is 68.
(b) Number of candies in each bag = 12
Number of bags = 12
Number of candies in 12 bags = 12 x 8 = 96
Therefore in total Sam has 96 candies.
