from the word polynomial. Basically monomial is a polynomial having only one term. This cannot be separated

from polynomial; this is itself as a part of the polynomial. Two different monomials can combine to become

binomials, in the similar way it can be trinomial likewise. But monomial is the base of all these. So it can be

treated as a building block of the polynomial.

Add the following monomials:-

a) 5x and 4x

b) 2x and -1x

a) In this case both terms (monomials) are positive, hence it can be add in a straight way, which is shown

below:-

5x + 4x =9x

So 9x is answer.

b) Since in this case one term is negative, so when add these two terms, we have to subtraction only,

which is shown below:-

2x+ (-1x)

= 2x-1x

= 1x.

Add the following monomials:-

1) 3x and 4x

2) 10x and -8x

1) In this case both terms (monomials) are positive, hence it can be add in a straight way, which is shown

below:-

3x + 4x =7x

So 7x is answer.

2) Since in this case one term is negative, so when add these two terms, we have to subtraction only,

which is shown below:-

10x+ (-8x)

= 10x-8x

= 2x.
