Arithmetic mean generally referred as mean is defined as the ratio of sum of all the numbers to the number of numbers in the given data. In statistics it is represented by a symbol μ.

Median is the middle value in the given data. To find the median the given data should be rearranged in either increasing or descending order.

Mode is the number that occurs most often in the given set of data.


Example 1: Find the mean, median and mode of 12, 28, 11, 5, 9, 32, 15

Mean = Sum of all numbers / Number of numbers

Mean = (12 + 28 + 11 + 5 + 9 + 32 + 15) / 7

Mean = 112 / 7

Mean = 16

To find the median the terms should be arranged in increasing or decreasing order

Increasing order: 5, 9, 11, 12, 15, 28, 32

Median is the middle number. Hence median is 12.

Mode is the number which occurs most often. Here no number is repeating. Hence there is no mode for this given data.

Example 2: What are the median, mode and range of 4, 5, 8, 1, 5, 10, 4, 5

Median: Rearranging the data in decreasing order 10, 8, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 1

As the number of numbers is 8 (even), we will have two middle numbers (4th and 5th numbers). Now to find the median we

find the average of middle numbers.

Median = (5 + 5) / 2 = 10 / 2 = 5

Mode: 4 occurred two times and 5 occurred three times in the given data. So 5 is the mode.

Range is the difference between maximum and minimum value.

Hence range = 10 – 1 = 9
