Linear programming is a method in which a function containing the variables ‘x’ and ‘y’ is analyzed and if the

linear function is maximized or minimized, then the maximum or the minimum value is calculated accordingly.

Example 1: Given p= 3x+ 2y as the objective function. Find the maximum value of the function if

the constraints are x≥ 0, y≥ 0 and x+ y ≤ 1.



Given objective function:p= 3x+ 2y

Now in order to find the maximum value of the objective function, we should first solve the equations of the

given constraints.

Solving equations x= 0 and y= 0 -> Intersection point = (0, 0) ->p= 0

Solving equations x= 0 and x+y=1 -> Intersection point= (0, 1)-> p= 2

Solving equations y= 0 and x + y=1-> Intersection point = (1, 0)-> p= 3

Hence the maximum value of p = 3.



Example 2: Given p=5x + 4y as the objective function. Find the maximum value of the function if

the constraints are x≥ 0, y≥ 0 and 2x+ y ≤4.



Given objective function:p=5x- 4y

Now in order to find the maximum value of the objective function, we should first solve the equations of the

given constraints.

Solving equations x= 0 and y= 0-> Intersection point = (0, 0)-> p= 0

Solving equations x= 0 and 2x+y=4-> Intersection point= (0, 4)-> p= 16

Solving equations y= 0 and 2x + y=4-> Intersection point = (2, 0)-> p= 10

Hence the maximum value of p = 16
