Ionic solution is the solution where a strong electrolyte solution splits into its respective ions because it has

ionic compounds. Ionic strength is the strength of these ions in the solution and their activity with other ions

depends on this strength. Ionic strength calculator is an instant online tool which can easily calculate the ionic

strength of compounds.

Example 1:  What is the ionic strength of 1.0M of KCl solution?

In order to find the Ionic strength of a solution, we can use the formula:

<-Ionic strength, I = 1/2 ∑ (Zi2 * Mi)

Where Zi = charge of a particular ion in the solution

Mi = Molarity of the ion in the solution

KCl solution contains <- K+ and Cl- ions

ZK+ = 1 and ZCl- = 1

<-MK+ = 1.0M and MCl- = 1.0M

Hence<- Ionic strength, I = 1/2 [(12*1) +(12*1)

<-I = ½(2) = 1.00

Example 2:   What is the ionic strength of 1.0M of MgCl2 solution?

In order to find the Ionic strength of a solution, we can use the formula:

<-Ionic strength, I = 1/2 ∑ (Zi2 * Mi)

Where Zi = charge of a particular ion in the solution

Mi = Molarity of the ion in the solution

MgCl2 solution contains <- Mg+2 and 2Cl- ions

ZMg+2 = 2 and ZCl- = 1

<-MMg+2 = 1.0M and MCl- = 2(1.0) = 2.0M

Hence<- Ionic strength, I = 1/2 [(22*1) +(12*2)

<-I =1/2*(6) = 3.00
