Instantaneous velocity is the velocity of an object at any given instant of time. Instantaneous velocity is the rate of change of displacement with respect to time. Example 1: Find instantaneous velocity of an object which has displacement ‘x’
given by the function, x(t) = t2 + 3t at time, t = 4secs.

Given displacement ‘x’ function with respect to time t  x(t)= t2 + 3t

Instantaneous velocity, v(t) = Derivative of x(t)

v(t) = Derivative of (t2 + 3t) with respect to time.

Hence v(t) = 2t + 3

Velocity at the instant, t = 4seconds   v(4) = (2 * 4) + 3

                                                           v(4) = 8 + 3 = 11

Instantaneous velocity at t = 4secs 11m/secs
 


Example 2: Find instantaneous velocity of a particle having displacement ‘x’ given by the function, x(t) = 6t3 at time, t = 2secs.

Given displacement ‘x’ function with respect to time t  x(t)= 6t3

Instantaneous velocity, v(t) = Derivative of x(t)

v(t) = Derivative of 6t3 with respect to time.

Hence v(t) = 18t2

Velocity at the instant, t = 2seconds  v(2) = 18 * 22 = 72

Instantaneous velocity at t = 2secs 72m/secs
