Cosine is a trigonometric measurement of an angle in a right angle triangle which is equal to the length of the adjacent side divided by the length of the hypotenuse. Example 1: Find the cosine of angle A in the given right angle triangle?




Given   length of the adjacent side = 4 cm and the length of the opposite side = 3 cm

Now the length of the hypotenuse needs to be calculated.

Hypotenuse2 = (opposite side) 2 + (adjacent side) 2.

Hence hypotenuse2 = 42 +32 = 16 + 9 = 25 cm2

Therefore, hypotenuse = 251/2 = 5 cm

Now cosine angle = length of adjacent side / length of hypotenuse.

Cosine (A) = 4 cm/ 5cm = 4/5.


Example 2: Find the cosine of angle A in the given right angle triangle?




Given èlength of the adjacent side = 12 cm and the length of the opposite side = 5 cm

Now the length of the hypotenuse needs to be calculated.

Hypotenuse2 = (opposite side) 2 + (adjacent side) 2.

Hence hypotenuse2 = 122 +52 = 144 + 25 = 169 cm2

Therefore, hypotenuse = 1691/2 = 13 cm

Now cosine angle = length of adjacent side / length of hypotenuse.

Cosine (A) = 12 cm/ 13 cm = 12/13.
