Absolute value of any number whether it’s negative or positive represents only its positive version. Absolute value is actually the distance of the number from the center and is denoted by “| |“(modulus sign). Hence absolute value is never negative! Absolute value tool is a simple tool which can help us find the absolute value of any number.

Example 1: Find the absolute value of | 5 | and | -5 |.

The definition of absolute value tells us that,

| x | = x (Here the number inside the modulus is positive)

| -x | = x (Here the number inside the modulus is negative)

Hence following the above rule we can say that,

| 5 | = 5

and | -5 | = 5

(In both the cases of number being 5 or -5, the absolute value of it is still 5)

Example 2: Solve the absolute value equation | x – 3 | = 2 and find the value of ‘x’.

| x – 3 | = 2

Any absolute value equation has two possibilities,

(x – 3) = 2 or (x – 3) = -2

If (x – 3) = 2, then solve for ‘x’.

Adding ‘3’ on both sides, we get x = 2 + 3 è  x = 5

If (x – 3) = -2, then solve for ‘x’.

Adding ‘3’ on both sides, we get x = -2 + 3   x = 1
